Spring Is Peak Season for Outdoor Photoshoots Near Zion — Here's Where to Go

By Tyler Webb | Zion Canyon Light | Springdale, UT

If you've been waiting for the right time to book a photoshoot in Southern Utah, that time is right now.

March through May is the single best window of the year for outdoor photography in this region. The desert wakes up — wildflowers push through the red sand, the Virgin River runs full and clear from snowmelt, the air is cool enough to be comfortable on a hike, and the light has that particular quality that only comes before the summer heat flattens everything out. Crowds are manageable. The landscape is alive. And the range of locations within an hour of Springdale and St. George is genuinely unmatched anywhere in the American Southwest.

Here's where I love to shoot this time of year — and what makes each spot special.

Zion National Park & Springdale

Spring in Zion is extraordinary. The cottonwoods along the Virgin River leaf out in a brilliant fresh green that contrasts with the red canyon walls in a way that only lasts a few weeks. Wildflowers appear along the Pa'rus Trail. The river is high and photogenic. And the light inside the canyon in April and May, when the sun finally clears the walls at a reasonable hour, is as good as it gets anywhere.

For photoshoots, spring is ideal because the park is busy but not yet at peak summer capacity — which means you can still find quiet moments in the right spots at the right hours. Early mornings and late afternoons are magical.

Springdale itself — the small town at the park entrance — offers beautiful canyon views, rustic character, and easy access for families and couples who want striking photos without a long hike.

Virgin, La Verkin & Hurricane

These small towns just west of Zion sit in a transitional zone between the canyon country and the wider Virgin River Valley — and they're underrated for photography. The landscape here is more open than inside the park, which means you get the dramatic red rock backdrop with more breathing room and almost no crowds.

The Virgin River winding through this corridor is beautiful in spring when water levels are up. Roadside pulls along Highway 9 between Hurricane and Springdale offer sweeping views that look like painted backdrops. The area around La Verkin Creek is lush and green in spring, a stark contrast to the surrounding desert.

For families and couples who want something a little different from the iconic Zion shots — something that feels more personal and less "tourist photo" — this corridor is one of my favorite areas to work.

Snow Canyon State Park — St. George / Ivins

Snow Canyon's red rust sandstone contrasts beautifully with white, making it a stunning location for any kind of session — the sage colors sprinkled throughout add depth and texture that photographs exceptionally well.

Spring is ideal here because temperatures are still mild — by June and July, Snow Canyon can be brutally hot by mid-morning. In March and April you can shoot comfortably well into the day. The park is also far less crowded than Zion, which means you're not competing with tour buses for your shot.

The lava fields, red dunes, and slot canyon sections of Snow Canyon each have a completely different visual character — you can move between them in a single session and come away with images that look like they were shot in three different places.

Sand Hollow & Quail Creek — Washington / Hurricane

Sand Hollow State Park is Southern Utah's most striking combination of elements — vivid red rock desert meeting clear blue reservoir water. Where fiery red rock meets vibrant, clear water, Sand Hollow is one of the most visually arresting photography locations in the region.

Spring is the sweet spot before summer crowds arrive and water levels are still high. The contrast between the red sandstone, the blue water, and the green desert brush in April is something you genuinely can't replicate any other time of year. This is a particularly strong location for adventure shoots, couples, and anyone who wants something that reads distinctly "Southern Utah" without looking like every other Zion photo.

Quail Creek nearby offers similar red rock and water scenery in a slightly more intimate setting — great when Sand Hollow is busy.

Kolob Terrace Road — North of Virgin

One of the most overlooked drives in the entire region. Kolob Terrace Road runs north from Virgin, Utah and leads to a massive golden grassy area with stunning red cliffs in the background — great for small to larger groups. In spring, the grasses are vivid green rather than gold, and the red cliff backdrop behind them is striking.

This road winds through some of the most dramatic scenery in the Zion area with a fraction of the traffic. It's a favorite for sessions where I want the scale and drama of canyon country without any of the crowds. Note that higher sections can have lingering snow into April — check conditions before heading up.

Downtown St. George & Tonaquint

Not every great photoshoot requires a national park. Downtown St. George offers year-round shooting opportunities — from Main Street to the city square, with a genuine urban-meets-desert character that's uniquely Southern Utah.

Why Spring Books Fast

Spring is my busiest season for a reason. Families visiting Zion on spring break, couples planning elopements before summer heat, locals who've been waiting out winter — they all converge on the same short window of perfect conditions. If you're thinking about booking a session this spring, sooner is better. Early mornings book first, and April weekends fill up weeks in advance.

Sessions starting at $249 for families and couples, $349 for adventure shoots.
